Y Queensland are recruiting a Work Health and Safety Manager on a Permanent Full-Time basis to join and lead their team in the Fortitude Valley.
About the role
As the WHS Manager at Y Queensland, your role provides organisation-wide leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organisation’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) strategy and systems. This role ensures compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld), associated Regulations, and Codes of Practice, while fostering a positive safety culture across all areas of operation.
Reporting to the Executive Lead – Risk and Compliance, the WHS Manager oversees governance, reporting, and cultural initiatives that support the Board and senior leadership in meeting their due diligence obligations. The role also provides hands-on operational WHS support to a designated service group and leads a small WHS team to deliver proactive, high-quality safety services across a diverse not-for-profit environment.
What will my time look like?
- Develop, implement, and maintain WHS frameworks, policies, and procedures aligned with organisational strategy and legislative obligations.
- Provide WHS governance reporting to the Executive Lead, Board, and Audit and Risk Committee, including analysis of trends, risks, and performance
- Monitor compliance with the WHS Act 2011 (Qld), Regulations, and Codes of Practice, advising leadership on emerging issues and best practice
- Accept responsibility and accountability for compliance and cooperation with all WHS policies, procedures and practices established by the YMCA
- Provide tailored WHS advisory and support services to operational teams, including proactive leadership on WHS matters and advice to the Executive Leadership Team
- Lead incident management, investigations, including root cause analysis and the implementation corrective and preventative actions
Am I a good match?
- Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety or a related discipline
- Extensive WHS leadership experience in complex, diverse environments (e.g., community services, education, recreation, childcare, housing)
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of WHS frameworks and methodology, Queensland WHS legislation, codes of practice and related legislation
- Experience working in collaboration with key stakeholders and ability to develop and manage professional working relationships
- Strong experience in WHS governance, reporting, and risk management
- Proven ability to lead teams and influence organisational culture
- Unrestricted Class C Driver’s License
- Currently possess, or be willing to obtain, a positive notice Blue Card in accordance with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 prior to commencement
- Achievement of YMCA’s Safeguarding Children Training Certificate and complete annual refresher training.
- Eligibility to work in Australia.
